After 124 editions of Plane Thoughts, certain ideas keep showing up. This week I have pulled them into one place. Twenty-one positions, grouped under the three pillars I use for thinking holistically about life: health, wealth, relationships.
They are simple, but are easier to nod at than to live. If any resonate, the work is in the second part of that sentence.
Balance the three pillars. Health, wealth and relationships. They may not always be in perfect balance, and that is okay. What matters is that none of them is being starved.
Health
Healthy habits underwrite everything. Sleep, movement, light and food are not adjacent to performance. They are performance. Defend them especially when life is hard.
Look up in awe. Wonder is a daily discipline. Looking up reminds you of scale, and scale reorders most of what felt urgent.
Romanticise the ordinary. Perception shapes reality. Make the everyday beautiful on purpose, rather than saving life for the weekend.
Cracks are part of the form. Healing does not erase the past. It integrates it. The repaired thing can be more valuable than the one that was never broken.
Travel and language widen the lens. New places and a second tongue expand who you can become. They are amongst the highest-return investments available to you.
Treat writing as thinking. Words on a page sharpen what your mind cannot finish on its own. Write to know what you think, not to display it.
Wealth
Time is the only finite resource. Every minute spent on one thing is a minute not spent on another. Treat your calendar like a portfolio with no replenishment.
Implementation beats information. The bottleneck on a better life is rarely knowing more. It is doing something with what you already know.
Start by subtracting. Most progress is unlocked by removing something, not adding to it. Audit your inputs, your commitments and your possessions before you take on the next thing.
Build around identity, not outcomes. Decide who you intend to be. The habits that fit that person stop feeling like willpower.
Risk is the price of return. Loss aversion exaggerates the downside and hides the upside. The interesting life sits on the other side of the decisions that feel uncomfortable.
Inaction is still a decision. Staying where you are carries its own risks. They are quieter than the risks of acting, which makes them easier to ignore and more expensive when they catch up with you.
Patience is non-negotiable for the long game. Compounding only rewards those who do not interrupt it.
Reframe 'have to' as 'get to'. The same task carried out in two registers becomes two different lives. The language you use about your day is the experience you have of it.
Lifestyle design is a serious discipline. Design the life first, then build the career around it. Working backwards from how you want to live is more honest than working forwards from what you do.
Relationships
Family first. Whatever the question is, family is above the answer.
Be fully present with the person in front of you. Attention is the rarest gift you can give. It is also the thing people keep of you.
Speak the unspoken. What you will not name controls you. Naming an insecurity, a feeling or a difficult truth is the first move in disarming it.
Pick the right room. Where you live, who you spend time with and what you walk past each day shape you more than any plan. Choose the environment, then choose the actions.
Make people feel. People will not remember your achievements. They will remember how being with you made them feel.
Which of these are you living? Which could you do better on?
