#59 Bilingual benefits

I’ve recently been using my second language (Spanish) more frequently and in contexts I have typically not used it before, such as reading non-fiction books. Whilst fluent, I’ve still been conscious of the extra cognitive effort involved and how, with more usage, this has steadily fallen.

We are all aware of the significant benefits of speaking multiple languages. Still, I’ve been curious about the impacts on the brain and decision-making of learning/utilising a second language, and here I share what I have learned.

Language shapes our communication, cognitive growth, and decision-making abilities.

Cognitive Benefits

  • Improved Memory: Bilingual individuals exhibit enhanced memory skills, with studies showing the positive impact of language learning on overall memory retention.

  • Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills: Bilingualism is linked to cognitive flexibility. Learning a second language provides the ability to think creatively and approach problem-solving with a unique perspective, ultimately fostering adaptability.

  • Heightened Focus and Attention: Language learning positively affects attention span and the ability to multitask.

Cultural Understanding and Broadened Perspectives

  • Increased Cultural Awareness: The intertwining of language and culture allows individuals to delve into the nuances of a second language, opening doors to a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.

  • Expanded Worldview: Language, as a tool for shaping perception, exposes multilingual individuals to different perspectives. Speaking multiple languages becomes a gateway to a more inclusive worldview.

Improved Decision-Making

  • Analytical Thinking: Bilingualism sharpens analytical thinking. Studies consistently reveal a link between bilingualism and improved analytical skills, providing individuals with a cognitive edge in critical thinking and decision-making.

  • Reduced Cognitive Bias: Knowing a second language can significantly reduce cognitive biases in decision-making. Exposure to different linguistic and cultural perspectives equips individuals to make more informed choices, mitigating the influence of biases such as confirmation bias.

Implementation idea

Have you been thinking about learning a new language but have been slow to start? Here’s your nudge. Have a second language but are lazy about using it in certain contexts? Here’s your nudge.

Embracing the gift of a second language is not just an investment in communication skills; it's an investment in a more enriched, interconnected, and enhanced version of ourselves.

Best, Alex Joshi.
