ChatGPT

Utilising tech to free up time for higher value activities

Last week I discussed the importance of understanding the value of our time to better utilise it. The rationale is that with a better understanding of the value we better prioritise and turn down activities which provide less value than that of the time we are putting in.

One way to unlock time is to delegate straightforward tasks that are cheap to outsource to someone else, say ironing or cleaning. But what if we could outsource higher value tasks which require us to use our cognitive capabilities, intelligence and intellect, and we could outsource them for almost no cost?

Enter ChatGPT, something you may have heard a lot about recently.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a powerful AI language model developed by OpenAI that uses a deep learning algorithm to generate human-like responses to natural language prompts. With its vast knowledge base, it can understand complex questions and generate accurate, contextually relevant responses in a variety of applications, including chatbots, text completion, and language translation.

ChatGPT has the potential to transform the way we communicate and interact with technology, making it a valuable tool for businesses and individuals seeking to improve their communication and customer support services.

AI tools like chat GPT can help save us time due to the vast amounts of data that can be retrieved and processed with accuracy at speed.

A common (negative) example that has been covered extensively is students getting ChatGPT to write their essays, but on a daily basis it can help us with collating information and ideas quickly, so we can use it as a starting point for creative work. It's professional applications include content creation and editing.

For example, the paragraph above in blue was written by chat GPT in approximately 13 seconds whilst I drank a glass of water. The rest of todays note is actually being dictated using my laptop as I read aloud the draft article I had written with pen and paper on a flight last week, requiring only small corrections from me. I have vastly reduced the time taken to produce this note relative to previous editions, allowing me more time to simply sit and think about the wider implications of the developments I am discussing in this note.

Implementation idea

Think about any tasks you do in both professional and personal life that you could complete faster or are more efficiently using tools like AI.

These tools are developing at a rapid rate and are unbelievably powerful. Whilst a lot of discussion is happening around the negatives like its impact on education and the possible eradication of jobs, we should always be looking at these new developments too see how we can potentially leverage them to enrich our lives. Machines can now do tasks that before could only be done by highly trained humans.

I personally find the possibility of human-machine hybrid work a very interesting and exciting development. Human beings have cognitive biases, get tired and are inconsistent. Leveraging and combining the strengths of both humans and machines could have significant benefits on our personal and professional lives through increased efficiency, as well as the potential for greater creativity and innovation.

Best, Alex Joshi.
