Start with the end in mind
The power of defining your desired outcome
In sailing, before setting off on a journey, it's essential to have a clear destination and route planned out. This way, the sailor can adjust their sails and steer the boat toward the desired target.
Similarly, in life, it's important to begin every task with a clear understanding of our desired outcome so that we can adjust our actions and decisions to stay on course towards our goals.
As we go through our days, we can get sidetracked by other less important tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. However, taking just a few moments to begin each task with a clear desired outcome in mind can make a big difference in our productivity and overall success.
Starting with the end in mind
In Stephen Covey's book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,’ he emphasises the importance of beginning with the end in mind. This means taking the time to clearly define the desired outcome of each task or activity before getting started. By doing so, we can better focus our efforts and ensure we are taking the right steps to achieve our goals.
The benefits of doing so are numerous. For one, it helps to eliminate distractions and unnecessary work. When we have a clear goal in mind, we are less likely to get sidetracked by other tasks or activities that do not contribute to our desired outcome. Being more intentional allows us to work more efficiently and make the most of our time.
Additionally, starting with a clear outcome can help us stay motivated and on track. When we know what we are working towards, we are more likely to stay focused and engaged throughout the task. Self-regulation, or the ability to control one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to achieve goals, is a key predictor of success in various life domains. By beginning every task with a desired outcome, we activate our self-regulatory resources and increase our chances of success.
Implementation idea
Before starting each task, take just a few moments to define the desired outcome.
Also, think about the steps needed to get there. Then, periodically review your progress against the end goal to ensure you are on track and make adjustments as needed.
Beginning with the end in mind is a habit that takes practice. But the more we make this a part of our daily routine, the more we will see the benefits in our productivity and success.
